Step 1: Detection and Diagnosis

• Wet the hair thoroughly and apply a generous amount of conditioner.
• Use a fine-toothed metal lice comb.
• Under good lighting, comb the hair section by section from roots to ends.
• Wipe the comb on a white paper towel after each pass.
• Confirmed Diagnosis: Finding a live, crawling louse. (The presence of nits alone does not mean an active infestation).

Step 2: Treatment - Day 1

• Choose an approved treatment appropriate for your child's age (consult a pharmacist or doctor).
• Read the instructions carefully and follow them precisely. Most treatments are applied to dry hair.
• Apply the treatment over a sink, not during a shower, to minimize skin contact.
• Leave the treatment on for the specified time, then rinse with lukewarm water.
• Important: Do not wash the child's hair with regular shampoo for 1-2 days after treatment.

Step 3: Environmental Care (The 2-Day Rule)

• Wash bedding, clothing, and hats used in the last two days in hot water (130°F / 54°C) and dry on high heat.
• Place stuffed animals and non-washable items in a sealed plastic bag for two weeks.
• Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes.
• Vacuum floors and furniture.
• Do not use insecticidal sprays in the house.

Step 4: Follow-Up

• Continue to comb wet hair with the special comb daily or every other day for two weeks to remove any remaining nits.

Step 5: Re-treatment - Day 9 (or as directed)

• This step is crucial! Apply the second dose of treatment on the specified day (usually between day 7 and 10) to kill any newly hatched lice.
• Skipping this step is the most common reason for treatment failure.

Step 6: Prevention

• Teach your child to avoid head-to-head contact with others.
• Remind your child not to share hats, combs, or headphones.
• Check the hair of family members weekly.
